With over two decades of experience tutoring, interviewing, and partnering with tutors, I’ve learned what separates excellent tutors from average ones. Parents can hear most of the signals during a short phone interview, then confirm them with references that provide real insight.


Look for Pattern Spotters


Strong tutors do more than correct wrong answers. They identify patterns in mistakes and trace them back to the root. For example, if a student misses word problems, the real issue may be reading comprehension, not math.


Phone interview test: Ask, “How do you figure out why a student misses a problem?” The answer should sound like a clear process, not guesswork.


Gauge Genuine Enthusiasm


The best tutors light up when they teach. Energy and passion are contagious, and students feed off them. Tutors who are only in it for the paycheck rarely inspire lasting motivation.


Phone interview test: Ask, “What do you enjoy most about tutoring this subject?” Flat or generic answers signal low engagement.


Ask About Independence Building


Excellent tutors equip students with strategies to solve problems on their own. They do not just provide answers.


Phone interview test: Ask, “What strategies will my child be able to use independently after working with you?” Strong tutors should mention concrete skills such as annotation, outlining, or step-by-step problem solving.


Check Flexibility in Teaching Style


Not every student learns the same way. Seasoned tutors have multiple approaches such as visual models, analogies, drills, or breaking problems into smaller steps. If one method fails, they pivot.

Confirm Progress Tracking


Progress should never be a mystery. Great tutors use tools like short quizzes, updated score graphs, or writing samples to show growth.

Notice Professionalism During the Call


The phone call itself is a preview of their tutoring. Notice whether they show up on time, ask about your child, speak clearly, and outline next steps. A sloppy call predicts sloppy sessions.


Pay Attention to Connection


The relationship matters as much as the lesson. A student who feels respected and encouraged will thrive. A tutor who makes them feel small will not succeed long term.


Parent check: After the call, ask yourself, “Would my child feel comfortable and motivated with this person?”


Verify With References That Matter


Strong tutors welcome references. The goal is useful detail, not generic praise. Ask for one recent reference and one that goes back at least six months. If confidentiality is an issue, ask for anonymized progress samples such as before-and-after essays, math error logs, or score trends.

  2. What changed after four to six sessions?

  3. What concrete skill or habit stuck after the tutor left?

  4. How did the tutor handle setbacks?

  5. Would you hire this tutor again for another child?


What to listen for: specifics, clear skills, and calm handling of challenges. If all you hear is, “They were great, you’ll love them,” without details, the reference is not useful.

No clear plan

If the tutor cannot describe how the first sessions will run, progress will stall.


Too much hand holding

Tutors who provide answers instead of building skills create dependence, not independence.


No progress tracking

If there is no system for measuring growth, you will always be guessing.


Lack of enthusiasm

Low energy from the tutor leads to low energy from the student.


Poor time management or suspicious availability

Having many students is not a problem if sessions start on time and stay focused. Red flags include rushed lessons or constant rescheduling. On the other hand, a tutor who is always free may lack demand for a reason.


Over promising

Be cautious of guarantees like, “I can raise your child’s score by 300 points in a month.” Strong tutors focus on steady, realistic improvement.


Weak connection with your child

If your child dreads sessions after a first meeting, the fit is wrong.


Quick Parent Checklist


Ask yourself after the phone interview:


  • Did the tutor explain a clear diagnostic process?

  • Did they sound enthusiastic and specific?

  • Did they emphasize building independence?

  • Did they show a plan for tracking progress?

  • Did they handle the call professionally?

  • Did they provide strong references without hesitation?


If you can answer yes to these, you are on the right track.


The best tutors do more than review homework. They diagnose patterns, build durable skills, track progress, and inspire confidence. A thoughtful phone interview combined with strong references allows parents to spot these qualities early and avoid costly mistakes. Choose the tutor who brings process, passion, and proof, and your student will feel the difference within weeks.
